Bits & Pieces Audio and Acoustics Consultancy

Bits & Pieces (montage by Leigh Hurlock)
BITS & PIECES was formed in 1986 by Simon Kahn, a Chartered Engineer with 20 years experience in broadcasting and performance engineering and operations at the highest level.

Activities are now divided between recording and publishing sound effects, and consultancy and specialist engineering in Broadcast and Theatre audio and acoustics.

Projects have ranged from simple advice for home studio acoustics to complete installation contracts, such as the BBC Radio Theatre technical facilities including editing channel and assisted reverberation system. We also have experience of critical timetable projects, such as the complete refurbishment of the stage management control systems for the two main theatres at the National Theatre's South Bank complex without the loss of any performances.

We believe that projects should be designed to support users under pressure, not just to meet specifications. Programmes and productions often make demands on the facilities that were not envisaged at the outset of the project. This is not just a matter of delivering 'on time and on budget'. The key to being able to offer practical solutions to creative requirements lies in understanding both the needs of the user, and the possibilities of technical equipment or acoustic environment, whatever the scale of the project. Too often, the users know what they wish to achieve, but are unsure of the technical details required for a fully functioning system, whilst Engineers and sales staff know the equipment, but do not understand the specific needs of theatre and radio users. BITS & PIECES can bridge this gap and convert a requirement into a fully functional system.

More information will follow, but for now you can look at a list of past projects

Where a complete package, or a design & build solution is required, we can assemble a team of specialists to offer a complete 'one-stop' service. We regularly work with leading contractors and consultants but retain our independence so that we can always offer the solution that is in the client's best interests. Where all or part of a project is outside our scope, we will be happy to recommend other specialists. BITS & PIECES expertise and experience can benefit any stage of a project, including remedial work, but the greatest benefit is usually obtained by involvement at an early stage.
